LRRC Goes to the Mudfest! added 4/20/10

Spotted at this years Mt. Penn Mudfest were the LRRC's Andy Charles, Bill Smith, Bonnie (second in age) & Paul Stoeckl, Heide Moebius (first in age), Andy Gingich (me), and Bob Long.

My name was pulled in the "raw egg carry" drawing, and I successfully traversed the 15 K course without breaking my egg, and brought home a bag of Godiva chocolates for my efforts.

The outstanding singer, Spice, turned up to perform "Sweet Caroline" TWICE with the band that was playing, and a lovely time was had by all.

Have a great Easter.

Fat Ass 50k added 4/3/10

Thanks, everyone, for being willing to come out to PA and run what I hope will be a challenging 50k course on Memorial Day weekend. The date is firm, and to that end, we have a campsite reservation for the group. If anyone is interested in camping the night before or the night after the race, there will be more than ample space. There are flush toilets and hot showers available on site as well.

As I confirm the final course and figure out all the details, I will send the information to these email addresses. In the meantime, spread the word to anyone you know who might be interested.

I am really looking forward to the event and spending a great day in the woods with so many good friends and accomplished runners!

New Year's Eye Opener The 2010 Eye Opener was terrific & wonderful succces and cold as hell. Revelers ran through the creeks, along the trails & high atop the ridges. See the pictures.

Christmas Party Covered Dish Get2Gether Thursday December 10, 2009 at 6:30 PM. Once again Lynn Morrow will open up her home to the likes of the LRRC's Christmas revelers and other ilk. Lynn's been doing this for year's in what amounts to a great time to see old and new friends alike. Come one, come all, see detailed information on where to go (Millersville) and what to do (bring something to eat).

Lancaster County Cross-Country 5K Race/Walk The first ever LCXC5KR/W was a true cross country style race, complete with yellow, blue & red flags, a small water jump along with highschool football program style sponsors plaquered along the course. The race made a bunch of sense - held at a highschool (Manheim t-wip hs) which grants a captive audience (parents of XCurrz), legions of good volunteers (am guessing the XC team) and it didn't hurt that those that put on the race probably have some race experience as well. So the result was a well directed first time race that had 163 finishers, nice stuff for your entry - long sleeved black shirt with a neat logo, some candy and other doo-dads from interested sponsors. Known names included Greg Cauller (2nd overall), Evan Sandt (4th), Tim Dunlap (5th/1st MT alum), Bob Long, Sil Simpson, Brent Kametz and many more. See results and 700+ photos.

Fowl Run Sil Simpson's timeless quote rings true, each and every Thanksgiving. "An hour of activity followed by a day of motionless gluttony." This year's Fowl Run commences at Long's Park's pavillion #3, 9:00 AM. We'll run roads or trails and regroup around 10:00 AM for annual elections and the ever-popular drawing-of-the-tickets-for-door prizes. If you're wondering if it's a race, it's not. See the Fowl Run page.

Gangbang Well, maybe not what you're thinking (right?). Pennsylvania has an active sportsman community and this means mostly guys go into the woods with big guns around this time of year (November & forward). It's all perfectly legal, ok and everyone has a right to participate. The LRRC has members that enjoy hunting and running. The only thing is that, unlike bowling or watching Oprah, carelessness can lead to painful or fatal consequences. Ok, fits for bowling, perhaps not Oprah. The best that can be hoped for is that correct targets are identified by those doing the shooting, as one of the lead mantras is always "•Before shooting, carefully identify your target and beyond." What's the best thing for the trail runner? Just stay off the trails on opening day. There's not much one can do to avoid the masses. Head to the places that never allow hunting like the county parks. See PA hunting laws.

Stoudt's Brewing Distance Classic A record turnout (233 finishers!) ran in humid and fairly warm tempertures at this year's '09 SBDC. Jeremy Brady was the overall winner, clocking a near (6 seconds off) record 38:53 while Samatha Bausher-Grybosky ran away with the female crown at 50:15 . Registrants were treated to commemorative SBDC pint glasses and finishers were awarded special finishers medals. Many LRRC members made this race happen. Race Director Peter Belanger took on the RD duties again this year, overseeing the largest ever crowd at the SBDC. Many others made things happen at registration, the water stops, the finishing chute, the set-up, the clean-up, timing & much, much more. LRRC runners included Adam Smith, Kaye Mede, Jim Haun, Doris Olney, Annie Poland (age grp winner), Myron Zwally, Evan Sandt, Kary Zimmerman, Joe Lee, Jody Brown, Doug Thomas and many, many, many more. See results.

Conestoga Trail Run. Much thanks to Bill Smith for putting on the 17th annual CTR. Wet conditions greeted 120+ finishers. After many years of running the CTR, Tadd Morris was overall the male winner. Overall female honors went to Heather Neff. Masters winners were Tadd Morris and Diana Widdowsin. 17 consecutive/streak alive year finishers included Jim Cramer, Frank McCardell, Andy Keegan, Robert Huey and Bob Long. Many thanks to all volunteers and participants. See the CTR Page for photos and news reports.

Steamtown Marathon Congratulations to Steamtown finishers Bob Long, Dave Strangarity, and Andy Gingrich. Andy sent us a nice report: Bob Long, Dave Strangarity, and Andy Gingrich ran the Steamtown Marathon on Sunday Oct. 11. A beautiful chilly autumn day with the most prettiest fall foliage yet, with the usual abundance of great volunteers and cheering crowds. Didn't see anyone from "The Office" handing out Jello shots in the closing miles but the Hashers were out! See the results.

Corn Roast A mighty thanks to host Dick Minnich and all volunteers that brought this year's corn roast - from them to all of us - which meant corn for all - thanks to Tamara & Ernie Garrett - trails to run, bike & hike; a lake to swim, row, oar & paddle along with enough food to keep anyone in the o-kay disposition. See a small number of pictures.

Green Lakes Endurance Runs Diana Widdowsin & Dee Miller ran, results not online as of presstime, though we do know they finished.

Amos Herr Honey Run 5k Peg Saunders, Dennis Faust, Doug Arndt (age grp), Jeff Kirchner (age grp winner), Karen Sandt along with Miles & Rae (age grp), Evan Sandt, Christian Taylor, Connie Buckwalter and probably a few others ran this year's AHHR. Un-fortunately this race was scheduled on the same day, pretty similar time to Etown's 10k. Race Directors - spread 'em out & people will run both. Overalls: Chris Ecker male, Anne Nash female. See results.

Elizabethtown Twilight Trot 10K Looks like Daryl Brown & Liz Smith ran to the wins. LRRCurz: Travis Hess (age grp winner), Bill Doherty (age grp), Diana Griffiths (age grp), Peter Belanger, Doug Thomas and Bob Long (see report), Un-fortunately this race was scheduled on the same day with a pretty similar time to Landisville's 5k. Race Directors - spread 'em out & people will run both. See results.

Half Wit Half Marathon Looks like Daryl Weaver was 4th overall/1st LanCountian others: Steve Goss, Tim Watts, Tom Howe, Doug Thomas, Bob Stein, Bob Long & Krista Cox. Others? Probably - see results.

Seca 5k: Sil Simpson has a nice report - Travis Hess, Diana Griffiths, Frank McCardell, Evan, Karen, Miles and Rae Sandt, and Sil Simpson all ran, enjoying that first mile and a quarter up hill then some flat, a dazzling downhill followed by yeah, more uphill and finally back down the hill we started-the one that ramped everyone's opening mile split 15% higher than the norm. In any case, a good time, good weather, good event. See results.

Vacation Another time away and it means no updates to this page. So what does that mean? The oceans of this column's readers will have to do something - attend a Tuesday Fun Run, run a Thursday Trail Run tell God that nature's nice at a Sunday Run in lieu of seeing updates. Time has done us the honor of confirming that time off is time off is time off and free time is worth spending a few sheckles to rustle up a good time. So it's margaritas, mountains, trails, picnics, playgrounds, lakes and whatever else Rae & Miles put together on our little family outing in the Finger Lakes. See you in the August double digits.

Andy Charles Sorry to hear Andy Charles has a broken foot ("a horizontal non-displaced incomplete fracture of the medial cortex of the mid-shaft of the second metatarsal.... air cast for 4 to 6 weeks"). That sucks! Could've happened in the months that have no reason for being on the calendar, like November or December when it's lights out at 4PM. We wish Andy well in his recovery.

Round Up. Heard a few LRRCz did Leola -Travis Hess & Donovan Graybill among them. Nothing clear on results. Bob Long wrote a terrific piece on the Pennsylvania Summer Biathlon. See it on the LRRC / Yahoo Groups site - here. The Catoctin 50K Trail Run takes place on 8/1, heard Leo Lutz & Christian Taylor are headed there. Catoctin's a tough, no frills ultra that tests stamina, perserverence and route finding in the hills of Northern Central way westward of the metro-sprawl.

Terre Hill Shoofly 5 Mile Run Daryl Brown & Dee Miller were overall winners. LRRCurz: Sil Simpson, Max Mlambo, Karen & Rae & Miles Sandt, Jim Haun, Evan Sandt, Diana Widdowsin (2nd F), Connie (age grp W) & Marc Buckwalter, Myron Zwally, Donovan
Graybill
, Heide Moebius (age grp W), Bob Long & many more. Other? Weather was really nice. First through third overall females: 40+. Pictures.

Round Up. Third Thirsty happened, no news at presstime. Ed Stauffer ran the 2nd Seven Sisters race - the Jimmy's Grill 5K (see report), Kathi Markley, Bonnie Stoeckl, Tracey Gardner and Kaye Mede did the York Ladies Sprint Tri - see the report. More? Let us know - be our eyes & ears - we've 1 pair of each.

Fresh Burst Large crowd - Travis Hess, Karen Sandt, Donovan Graybill, Miles Sandt (kids run!), Doug Arndt, Diana Widdowsin, Mimi Newcomer, Brian Mitchell, Bill Corbin, Annie Poland, Betsy Delise, Jeanette Arnold, Sil Simpson, Laurie Hess, Connie Buckwalter were among the 500+ that ran on a nice summer morning. See results & some pictures. Steve Farrah was this year's RD.

Ephrata Firecracker Let us know what happened - be our eyes & ears - we've 1 pair of each. See Results.

Marc Buckwalter ran the Finger Lakes Fifties - 50K in the beautiful Finger Lakes National Forest. Apparently this is Marc's first 50K, though he's got much ultra-like experience in the Ironman Tri ranks.

Double Trouble 15 & 30K Trail Runs Another Ron Horn extravaganza - no reports, but the results say Ale Bonilla, Barry Elder, Marc Buckwalter, Wendy Kimmel, Tom Howe, Barb Mongiovi and probably more ran, hopefully the report will tell us. See the results page.

Smith's Challenge Daryl Weaver won the 21st edition of Smith's Challenge, repeating his feat on a new course. 2nd overall & first master was Tim Schuler, followed closely by Mark Amway. 1st year, 1st time race director Andy Charles' enjoyed a fine day with 175 finishers, plenty of LRRC volunteers, including RD Emeritus Bill Smith, along with longtime righthand stats man Jim Buchanan. Weather was humid but not hot. An added bonus included barefoot runner/Born To Run author Christopher McDougall, See overall & age group results: Overall, Age Grps. If you're Facebook-urrr, check out the Smith's Challenge Fans page & see you in 2010. Bloggers & reporters: If you'd like us to link to your reports, let us know. Also: see the LNP's article.

Christian Taylor ran the Longest Day Trail Challenge, an ultra on the Mason Dixon Trail, beginning at Susquehanna Park, Maryland to Long Level, near Wrightsville, PA. Roxanne & Dave Strine volunteered as well. Hopefully we'll get a report from Christian? Until such time, check out a very nice quick report from the VHTRC's Jaret Seiberg.

Double Creek Half Marathon Diana Widdowsin & Dee Miller ran, finishing in what we believe as 2-3.

Solanco Alumni meet Marcus Grimm, Connie Shepos-Buckwater & Alan Martin have ties to late 80s era Solanco (Mules?) heritage under very good coach Art Harrington. All ran. Don't know if yearbooks were present.

Joe Heyer Run/Walk If one were writing a report? Well, thought it would rain as drops were felt but not seen prior to the start, so that should say something about the humidity. The turnout on a Wednesday night? Pretty good, tough to find parking spot. The course? As flat as you'll get around this the county of Lancaster. The LRRCurz? - Donovan Graybill, Karen & Miles & Rae Sandt, Sil Simpson, Elam Riehl, Doug Arndt, Kary Zimmerman, Leo Lutz, Jeff Kirchner, Peter Barber, Joni Shirk, Frank McCardell and certainly more - let us know. Results? Not available at post time, but if you see the results page, they should be soon.

Fun Run Schedule Due to a family illness, the Tuesday June 09, 2009 Fun Run location has been moved to the home of hosts Roz & Bill along with guest host Bill Smith at 1595 Wilson Ave, Lancaster, PA. See more information via the updated schedule.

Florida Keys 100-mile marathon Diana Widdowsin was 3rd overall/2nd female on an all asphalt, no shade one hundred mile course in the great state of Florida, the state Dan Rather curiously called the Big Tamale (?). Steve Farrah posted Diana's stats. Was that a perfect 5 hour last split tainted by 2 lousy seconds? Not sure the results are current.

Dark & Dirty It happened, hopefully we'll get a report from those involved.... & now we know Ed Stauffer posted a nice report. Me, having not been there can only vicariously see a few stray LRRC/group site (here, here, here, here & Facebook postings so it all boiled down to a dark, muddy, rainy & more night high atop Mt. Penn. See results, pick out your favorite LRRCurr.

YWCA Race Against Racism Ahh, Lancaster's largest and fastest race. In a sad but true tale of the times, Tony the Tiger was not at the Kid's Race turnaround point. Bull Run Run 50 Mile Looks like Leo Lutz, Diana Widdowsin, Marcia Peters, Beth May & Christian Taylor all competed & completed the 50 mile distance. So that's 5 runners covering 250 miles....gee, who drives their car that far?... But seriously, congrats. Bull Run is wildly popular and to get in is a feat in & of itself. Training? For many, focused training started back in much colder months, about the time a lot of people make New Year's resolutions. Milestones - for Marcia, the VHTRC proclaimed Queen of Bull Run, 2009 marks her 12th finish. We think, but have not yet confirmed, that this is Beth's first 50 mile finish? - Let us know.
