The Tale of Two Races

It was a day of good weather (Jan.).
It was a day of bad weather (Feb.).
The jan. event was miserably cold until race time and then a miraculous break in the wind, temp. and flurries made for perfect race conditions considering the time of year.
It was a run with secure footing (Jan.).
It was a run with unsure footing (Feb.).
The Feb. ordeal started with icey corners and became more treacherous when the on-coming snow covered the macadam especially on those corners and down the hills.
It was a race of good times (Jan.).
It was a race of bad times (Feb.).
Nearly everyone felt good about the first race times because the college race course is much quicker than last year's Masonic Home's course. But nearly everyone's 2nd. race was a minute-plus slower than their Jan. time.
It was a women's race of veteran winners.
It was a women's race of youthful winners.
Vickie Cauller (34) won the 1st. race in 18:22 while the 2nd. race was contested between Justine Barr (14) 20:52 and Alex Felix (24) 20:59.
It was a race with a good turnout (263 in Jan.).
It was a race with a not as good turnout (162 in Feb.).
Race Director Chuck Wells was upbeat about the Jan. turnout because of the last minute publicity due to location changes. The Feb. shortage due to the weather predictions was expected although Chuck was surprised by 25 new entries on the 2nd. race day.
But some things never seem to change much.
-The E-town Lancaster County race always seems to attract a lot more Dauphin Co. participants than those from Lancaster Co.
-Bob Dressler won both races in 15:46 and 16:41.
-Mark Amway took 2nd. in both races in 16:17 and 17:06, followed closely by a Barber (Paul) in 16:57 and 18:09.
-Club members Doug and Abby Arndt, Judy Anttonen, Tammy Harris, Bill and Ryan Doherty, and Frank McCardell all won age group awards in their categories.
-And Sil Simpson ran in the fair weather race but was a no-show when the bad weather hit town.
